We’re always turning to the fabulous queen of street style, Olivia Palermo, for our latest fashion inspiration on chic, elegant and pulled together looks. She is our “it” girl for making runway to street style come together and most importantly understands the power of the waist-cinching wonder like no one else. From figure flattering to fixing styling woes to giving her outfit personality and charm – Olivia uses belts as the finishing touch to her fall outfits.

Since we’re heading to colder months, this could be the perfect time to start experimenting with this often overlooked accessory. Take a look how the style star wears her belts.

WEAR A BELT WITH SKIRTS

If you’re wearing your skirt on your natural waist line, adding a belt will help define your waist and make it look smaller.  A belt can also create a seamless look from where your shirt tucks into the skirt and it covers that elastic band that often is found on skirts.

We love the monochromatic looks in neutral tones that Palermo styled, and adding layers with coats, fringe and of course belts, adds perfect textural appeal.

BELT YOUR COAT

Arm yourself for the cold with a jacket, blazer or trench coat but then belt it, of course, to whittle an hourglass silhouette like Olivia Palermo.  You can choose a belt in the same color as your coat or you can make a statement with a contrasting color.

The mid-width belt is usually the best option for coats so it doesn’t add extra bulk but it’s pairs over a thicker coat fabric.  You can opt for a belt that has holes all the way around or a woven belt.  Or you can skip using the spokes and buckle and just tie it like Olivia Palermo did in image above.

Do you have a coat from last winter that you want to spruce up? Add a belt..and voila – new look!

Although Olivia often wears belts to accentuate her waist she’s also not afraid to use a belt as a statement making, eye-catching and center of attention accessory.  Whether she’s creating contrast with a black belt over a papaya colored skirt, bringing in print with a leopard belt or adding fringe detailing over a simple chiffon dress she’s giving each outfit more personality.

One of our favorite Olivia Palermo looks are her elegantly belted scarves applied to the floaty, printed dresses. It’s the Fall styling trick anyone can wear — with everything from pencil skirts and sweaters at the office to flared denim and blouses on weekends. You can create a totally different look just playing with scarves and belts and wear them over something you already have!
